Lourdes Cruz - Filipino Biochemist:

Doctor Lourdes Cruz has made scientific contributions to the biochemistry field of conotoxins, in particular the toxins of the venom of the marine snail Conus geographus. Lourdes Cruz documented the biochemical characterization of the homologous highly toxic monomeric peptides with internal disulfide bonds including: Conotoxin GI, Conotoxin GIA and Conotoxin GII. Lourdes Cruz has helped develop conotoxins for the purpose biochemical probes for examining the activities of the human brain.
Lourdes Cruz has published over one hundred and twenty papers in her field of study.

Angel Alcala - Filipino Biologist :

Angel Alcal has more than thirty years of experience in tropical marine resource conservationa. Angel Alcala is considered a world class authority in ecology and biogeography of amphibians and reptiles, and is behind the invention of artifical coral reefs to be used for fisheries in Southeast Asia. Angel Alcala is the Director of the Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management.

Alamat ng Pakwan

Humigit-kumulang sa tatlong daan taong namalagi sa Pilipinas ang mga Kastila. Layunin ng Espanyang sakupin ang mga katutubo. Naging kasangkapan ng mga Espanyol ang Katolisismo upang lalong mapadali nila ang pamamalakad dito. Bagamat sa Limasawa, Leyte nagdaos ng unang misa, may isang paring Kastilang nagngangalang Padre Novelles ang nakarating sa lalawigan ng Nueva Ecija.
Sinikap niyang kumbinsihin ang mga katutubo upang maging Katoliko. Upang magawa ito, pinag-aralan niyang makapagsalita ng kanilang wika. Madali naman siyang natuto. Sapagkat matagal na ring sumasamba sa mga anito ang mga katutubo, hirap na hirap si Padre Novelles na manghikayat.
Lalong pinagsikapan ng paring Kastila ang pagtuturo ng buhay at mga aral ni HesuKristo. Binigyang diin niya ang pagpapasakit ng Anak ng Diyos. Isinalaysay niya ang pagkapasan sa krus upang iligtas lamang ni Hesus ang mga makasalanang tao sa daigdig.
Sapagkat misyunero, marami ang naliwanagan sa katotohanan. Pero kahit marami ang sumunod sa itinuturo ng paring Espanyol ay may isang barangay na bulag pa ring sumasamba sa mga anito. Ito ang barangay na pinamumunuan ni Datu Diliwariw. Ayaw ng Datung paniwalaan ang mga aral na itinuturo sa Katolisismo. Sa labis na pagkagalit ipinadakip mismo ng datu sa mga nasasakupan ang misyunerong nangangaral.
Sapagkat batay sa turo ng Katolisismo ay nagpasan ng krus at ipinako sa kabundukan si HesuKristo. Ito rin ang parusang ipinataw ng di binyagang datu sa paring Katoliko.
Awang-awa ang maraming katutubo sa pagpapasan sa krus si Padre Novelles. Ang maalikabok at baku-bakong lansangan ng Nueva Ecija ay kangyang dinaanan. Sa bundok ng mga anito na ngayon ay kilala bilang bundok ng Caraballo itinindig ang krus. Habang nagbabaga ang araw ay isinakripisyo ng misyunero ang abang buhay. Katulad ni Kristo, isang matulis na sibat ang tumapos sa hininga ng paring Katoliko. Ang sariwang dugo sa dibdib nito ay mayamang umagos sa lupang pinagtindigan ng krus.
Matapos ipapatay ay hindi mapalagay si Datu Diliwariw. Naalala niya ang itinuturo ng misyunero na si Hesus daw ay muling nabuhay pagkalipas ng tatlong araw.
Upang makatiyak, isinama ng datu ang pinakamatapat na kawal nang dumating ang ikatlong gabi. Ginimbal sila ng katotohanan, ang bangkay na kanilang iniwan ay nawala sa kanyang kinapapakuan. Napaluhod ang datu kasama ng kawal. Inalala nila ang mga aral na itinuro ng misyunero tungkol kay Kristo. Taos puso silang humingi ng tawad. Sa kanilang pagyuko at pagluha ay may napansin silang munting halaman sa lupang dinilig ng dugo ng kabanalan. Ang nasabing halaman ay nagbunga ng animo makinis na ulo ng paring misyunero na kapag biniyak mo ay may lamang tila mapulang dugo ng kabanalan, matamis at nakaaalis ng uhaw. Magmula noon, ang nagging Katolikong datu ay lagi nagng dumadalaw sa pinagpakuang kabundukan. Ang panata niyang iyon ay kalakip ng pagtanggap ng kaparusahan sa malaking kasalanang nagawa niya sa paring ipinapatay.
Sapagkat tumubo ang kakaibang halaman ay tinawag ang bunga nito na pinagpakuan na nauwi sa pakuan na ngayon ay naging pakwan. Iyan ang pinanggalingan ng alamat ng pakwan.

 Alamat ng Mangga

Kaisa-isang anak nina Aling Maria at Mang Juan si Ben. Mabait at matulungin siya. Nagmana siya sa kanyang mga magulang na mababait din naman. Isang araw, isang matandang pulubi ang kinaawaan ni Ben. Inuwi niya ang pulubi sa bahay, ipinagluto at pinakain. Isang araw naman, samantalang nangangahoy, isang matandang gutom na gutom ang nasalubong niya. Pinakain din niya ito at binigyan ng damit.
Makaraan ang ilang panahon, nagkasakit si Ben. Sa kabila ng pagsisikap ng mag-asawa na pagalingin ang anak, lumubha pa rin ang kanyang kalagayan hanggang sa siya’y bawian na ng buhay. Ganoon na lamang ang iyak ng mag-asawa. Kinabukasan, habang nakaburol ang kanilang anak, dumating ang isang diwata. Hiningi nito ang puso ni Ben, Ibinaon ng diwata ang puso sa isang bundok. Ito ay naging punongkahoy na may bungang hugis-puso. Marami ang nakikinabang ngayon sa bungang ito.
